Under the title Reflections the
artists association PRO for the fourth time sets focus on a Europe
that is rapidly developing. This change of course leaves traces
in art as you will see in this years exhibition at Charlottenborg
Exhibition Hall from 25. 11. untill 17. 12. 2006.
This year Bente Christensen-Ernst will show a big portrait of
Orhan Parmuk, who just received the Nobel Price in litterature.
Madonna with bridle
Madonna with bridle, upper class women with bandaged heads after
the obligatory visit to the plastic surgeon, their foreheads
being filled with fresh botox from seringes, The gravestone of
Kafka, Maria Callas, Poloplayers on horseback, controll / submission,
facades, decadence, fascination the german visiting artist
Matthias Köster describes the seemingly carefree life of
the upper class in bright, shiny paintings.
With the inspiration from both italian renaissance, Goya, german
expressionism as well as Andy Warhol, Fellini and Bunuel Matthias
Köster show wellknown film divas, popicons, operastars and
more or less wellknown representatives from the international
jetset. Zooming in closely Köster shows us these people
as if they came from another planet, but he also show us the
backside of the glittering mask: unrepairable decay, the desperation
and melancholy behind the glimmering surface.
Matthias Köster was born 1961, educated at the Academy of
Art in Düsseldorf, where he also taught. He is represented
in artmuseums and collections worldwide. He lives and works in
Düsseldorf and Empoli, Italy.
Naked old men
Wearing boxing gloves and helmet a number of elderly men pose
in their drawing rooms. They all stand on a circular white carpet,
a reference to the spotlight. With this close reference to the
boxer as a symbol of raw strength and of potency, these men however
have a long time ago withdrawn from the spotlight - as far as
their bodies are concerned. The skin of their bellies is sagging,
the narrow waist and the broad shoulders now have the same measure,
and gravity makes the breastmuscles drop down.
In a society desperately looking for youth as an answer to almost
everything the body of the old man is completely nonexisting
in the medias. The visiting artist, photographer Tune Andersen
(born 1958) focuses on the aging body of the male sex.
With the series The Boxer Tune Andersen moves into
an unexplored and interesting field where the viewer is forced
to look at the male exclusively as body. Lately the
socalled metrosexual male has made it legimimite that men can
be vain. Tune Andersen sharply aims at the decay of the male
body. The handcoloring of the photos in brownish tones makes
the photographs acquire an aged, decayed expression and at the
same time the white podiumlike carpet glows with virginity making
the mens bodies stand out. Humor and irony lie in wait just below
the surface or behind the glove if you please.
Drømmeagtige malerier
Having a good eye on ferries, roads and railwaystations Karen
Gabel Madsen (born 1961) looks into her photoarchives for a proper
motive. It is chosen and a white primer is applied as a first
layer. In a refined way the white waterbased color is playing
with the brownish-grey of the canvas so that a gentle lacey
pattern becomes the first thing. At this level the structural
lines and the mood is created.
One of the paintings Karen Gabel Madsen show this year at PRO
is named trainreflection the movement inwards being
allready stressed in the title of the work.
Karen Gabel Madsen allways works at two levels, representing
nature and culture. The transition of these suspends time and
place making the often monumentally big canvasses dreamingly
melancolic and existentially concerning.
Besides Matthias Köster PRO presents
foreign visiting artists geographically spanning from Norway
to Turkey. From Norway comes the sculptor Marit Benthe Norheim,
Turkey is represented with the video-artist Selda Asal, Inci
Eviner, making installation and the two photographers Nazif Topcuoglu
and Sitki Kösemen, the latter cooperating in the show with
Bente Christensen-Ernst. From Montenegro comes the young Video-artist
Natalja Vujosevic, while Greece is represented by Nikos Giavropoulos,
creating a videosculpture especially for this exhibition.
